As a Capetonian the fires of the first week of March have left a deep impression on me …

As you drive along the Blue Route (M3) Freeway and you look over to Constantiaberg all you see is rust and ash … like a bristle brush, the burnt trees standing, against the grey black of ash.

A friend sent me this You Tube reference by a Jenny Eaves, a Deep South resident.

The Deep South is the Cape Peninsula basically from Lakeside to Cape Point, and from the top of Ou Kaapse Weg down and over to Noordhoek.

Deep South is within you if you live here, even if you are on its edge like me …

The burn is everywhere …

I have no idea who Jenny Eaves is but I feel her lyrics and I feel her song:

When she sings about the South Easter and you are Capetonian you cannot but feel it …

Like many Capetonians we saw the bravery of the firefighters in the face of the immense fire.

For those of us who witnessed the fire first hand, it is not possible to not feel emotional about the words …

The choppers flew over our Lakeside as they water bombed the mountainside … I wrote about them in past articles, as we cheered and waved, and gave thumbs up …

Subsequent to the main fire, arsonists set fire in the Cape Point area, and one of the chopper pilots lost his life.

It may have been one of those who flew over our heads, who saw us cheer and wave.

It was South Africans of all colours, creeds, shapes and sizes that came together to directly fight the fire or to support those who did, the dramatic images in the video captured by the photographer Gale McCall tell their own story …

The burned out close shaves are everywhere and it could have been far worse, far, far worse … !

In different ways the whole world is burning, and that burn is far, far worse than the fire of Cape Town – yet look at the images in the video and see what can be possible in all colours, creeds, shapes and sizes …

PS Now that I followed up on Jenny Eaves I discovered that she has quite a musical pedigree:

I thought that voice and the piano ability was too good for a mere part time hobbyist …
