This week has been classical Autumn in Cape Town … !

A South Easter initially, rising black over False Bay, lightening into gray as it reaches the Muizenberg Mountain top, before pouring white, boiling clouds of wild cotton balls and surreal sky fantasy castles on the other side …

Then the turn of wind, North West, the first of the waves of cloud appearing beyond Constantiaberg and the back of Table Mountain …

Calm clouds, but creative ones, as they reach over and think how they will shape their narratives overhead in the sky above …

There are many facets of expression …

Clouds, flat and content, high up …

Young bucks, determined and wanting to be significant, rising up from below, boiling …

The Sun shines, sometimes through high white cloud ceilings, sometimes through blue sky windows  …

In the afternoons, as it sinks, into the heavier darker cloud below … a white disc through a translucent gray …

Such days vary, they are both moody and cheery … blustery and still …

Raindrops from leaves sparkle in early mornings in the rising sun, then the day dries up and maybe grays …

Autumn rain seems to be heavy, it plops in shape as well, not only in sound … an emphasis of itself in every instance of opportunity …

Some of it arrived last night and plopped itself as it dripped in the shake of wind gusts, wild wet exclamation marks!

Performing their manic hip hop jerky routines, squirrels, plump in fat and bushy tailed, have been darting about, in frenzied expectation … Autumn is their high energy seasons, their pumped up time …

And now the April Autumn rain has finally arrived … plopping outside through the lace curtains …

Makes me think of the Guns ‘n Roses song November Rain … although we are in the upside down Southern Hemisphere so our Autumn’s epicentre is April …

What better way to express the rain in words than with a Japanese gogyohka ( 5 liner, each line with a natural pause):

gray bluster

leaves tumble in the street and car covers billow

roofs creak, stress and strain

the noise

before the rain
